Porthgain World Cup
Another great year for Porthgain World Cup (Pembrokeshire). A bit early this year (August 18th), which meant some usual suspects were unable to submit a team, Trefacwn included. Hopefully next year we will be back in the game.
Luckily the rain stopped just in time and Porthgain World Cup had sunshine all day. Some tense moments in the quarter finals, with two games going to penalty shootout. The most exciting match (in my opinion) was Mexico & Scotland. Mexico dominated in the first half, taking a 2 goal lead into the second half. With 50 seconds to go Mexico gave away a penalty to Scotland, which gave Scotland renewed hope. In the remaining 40 seconds Scotland managed to pull an equaliser. Then with 8 seconds of the match left, Scotland pulled it out of the bag and into the back of the net to win 3-2 and go through to semis.
The semis saw Australia hammer Portugal 5-0, and Scotland take out Ireland 3-1. After a long hot day, lots of effort and good fun, Australia took the cup in a 1-0 win against Scotland.
So if you were one of the unfortunate people who missed the Porthgain World Cup this year, keep your eyes peeled for next year’s dates (August2014) and either come for the fun and atmosphere, or add some competition to your day and put in a team – we will be there as usual, but this time with a full Trefacwn team.
